The Department of World Languages and Cultures in Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at Chapman University invites applications for an Instructional Assistant Professor of Japanese Studies, beginning August 1, 2024.

Responsibilities

• Teach lower and upper-division courses in the Japanese Studies program.
• Assist the Japanese program director and department chair with student advising, the Japanese club, assessment, the Japanese honor society, and development of a short-term travel course (January or Summer) to Japan.
• Offer regular office hours to provide students with opportunities for one-on-one consultations, academic advising, and clarification of course materials.
• Serve on academic committees or task forces within the institution and contribute to the overall mission of the institution by attending college, department, and university meetings, and supporting college-wide initiatives and events.

Applicants should have accomplished record of excellence in teaching at the university level, native or near-native fluency in Japanese, demonstrated organizational and management abilities, and ability to teach individual study as needed.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a willingness to work within an articulated program headed by the Japanese program director and department chair. Required

• A Ph.D. in Japanese, Japanese Cultural Studies, linguistics or related field from an accredited institution of higher education.
• Native or near-native fluency in Japanese.
• Evidence of excellence in teaching lower and upper-division Japanese.

Preferred

• Strong commitment to personalized education and mentorship of students.
• Successful record of teaching and/development of travel courses and/or semester programs in Japan.
