About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what's possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

The Staff Battery Controls Systems Engineer position will lead the high voltage battery's control system architectural definition and requirement development with respect to decomposing vehicle and battery system requirements to functional control system requirements that supports the delivery of the relevant battery attributes. This position will work cross-functionally to execute this responsibility, including the battery cell, thermal, design, software, and hardware teams, along with vehicle controls teams. The focus is on battery state and thermal estimation from project kickoff, definition, implementation, validation, and delivery to production.

Responsibilities

  • Staff Battery Control System (BCS) engineering deliverables for vehicle programs:
    • Own and lead system design process to analyze upstream requirements (vehicle, powertrain, system), cascade them to BCS sub-system features, and develop system requirement and validation specification.
    • Lead the BCS HV battery state estimation effort in close collaboration with BMS SW team; Drive algorithm development and implementation with respect to cell electrochemical performance, cell safety considerations, and vehicle performance.
    • Lead and support battery thermal conditioning requirements to deliver the best battery system attributes by reviewing optimal thermal system design for the packs, along with simulations that characterize battery thermal performance (for example to support best DCFC performance).
    • Create/update/modify/manage documentation to maintain accurate engineering work products; work with related engineers to review/approve/validate/release the deliverables and changes following Rivian engineering workflows and toolchains
  • Represent the Battery Control Systems Engineering Team as a subject matter expert in Battery Control functional areas with cross functional development teams
    • Support battery program engineers on upstream requirement development, validation, as well as planning and delivery of work products for different program milestones
    • Develop and contribute to Fault Tree Analysis, FMEA and generation of software and hardware diagnostic requirements
    • Communicate and drive cross functional development of control requirements with vehicle attribute, functional safety, propulsion, thermal, and energy management teams
    • Collaborate with system integration and validation engineers on validation planning; support validation execution and result review; support trouble shooting to determine solutions to observed issues
    • Adapt and work within dynamic development timelines of multiple programs, with accelerated hardware production timelines, and software release cadence
